RAMALLAH, ISRAEL - Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas described the Israeli withdrawal as an historic and joyful day for his people even as some Palestinians set fire to the abandoned Jewish synagogues in the vacated Jewish settlements. The completed withdrawal of the Israeli Defense Forces from the Gaza Strip after 38 years is indeed an historic event as the Abbas said.
Some settlers willingly withdrew from their homes after 38 years. Many, however, were forcibly removed. Thankfully, despite the resistance, no blood was spilled during the pullout.
In response to the pullout, Palestinians celebrated the Jewish pullout of Gaza and claimed the victory over the state of Israel. The Palestinians claimed that they forced this withdrawal with their terror attacks against Israel.
Even the chairman of the Palestinian Authority, Abu Mazen, joined in the celebration as he spoke to a large gathering in Gaza city where he declared, "Tomorrow, we will celebrate the liberation of Jerusalem."
Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal declared the Israeli withdrawal to be the beginning of the end of the Zionist dream. Mashaal called the pullout a defeat in the face of Palestinian resistance and a significant and historic step.
Mashaal also said that the Palestinian armed struggle is the only strategy that Hamas possesses and that the resistance is capable of ending the Israeli occupation and achieving all rights for the Palestinian people. Hamas is refusing to lay down their weapons and they say they will not lay down their weapons as long as Palestinian lands remain under the so-called Israeli occupation.
