PARIS, FRANCE - The people of the two European nations, France and the Netherlands, have rejected the proposed European Union Constitution. The proposed document would move the EU from a group of cooperating countries toward the ultimate goal of one united European nation. Some people have used the name "the United States of Europe" for the proposed supernation.
Elie Cohen, director of research at the National Center for Scientific Research, believes the "No" vote on the European Union Constitution by French voters was "an earthquake, a major historical event." Cohen believes this vote sent a terrifying message from a nation whose political scene is in disarray.
Tony Blair, the British Prime Minister, said the French No vote was a symptom of the fact that some European countries are struggling to come to terms with globalization.
