JERUSALEM, ISRAEL - On May 2, Israel marked Remembrance Day. Sirens sounded for two minutes and the nation of Israel fell silent as Jewish people stood to honor all of those who had given their lives in defense of the Jewish state in their many wars as well as those who had been killed in terrorist attacks.

Prime Minister Olmert has pledged to the bereaved families of the fallen that he would do whatever was within his power to strengthen Israel's security and to lead it towards the path of peace. Israel's Remembrance Day this year comes at a time when the Jewish state faces major threats from without and from within. There are those who want to eliminate the Jewish state and take the land of Israel for its own.

Israel marked its 58th birthday with Independence Day celebrations across the country on May 3. Israelis celebrated with visits to military installations, family picnics, and scores of gatherings where Israelis came together to recall the historic events in the brief history of their Jewish state.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said, "Israel has experienced many challenges and triumphs in its 58 years of existence. Born out of the ashes of the Holocaust, a nation of refugees, Israel has developed into a modern and vibrant country, and has emerged as a world leader in the fields of technology, medicine and science."

Israeli President Moshe Katsav said in a statement, "In 1948, the Yishuv [The Jewish community in the area prior to the declaration of the state of Israel] in the Land of Israel numbered 600,000 Jews and at present Israel’s population stands at 7 million people. We absorbed millions of new immigrants from the countries of Islam and from the Communist bloc, and we provided all with housing, education, social security and health services."

Politicians noted that with the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948, Jewish independence lost 2,000 years earlier was restored in the land of Israel, the birthplace of the Jewish people. Israeli political leaders are upbeat on the future of the Jewish state, even in light of the threats to Israel's existence coming from various sectors of the Arab and Islamic worlds, threats of annihilation and the taking of the land of Israel from the Jewish people. The fact that the Jews are still in the Land in spite of these troubles gives them reason to be hopeful.

Jimmy's Prophetic Prospective on the News

Even as Israelis celebrate the reunification of Jerusalem on Jerusalem Day this year, the controversy described for Jerusalem in the Last Days according to Bible prophecy comes better into focus.

When the Israeli Defense Force paratroopers led by General Marcus stormed the Lion’s Gate of the Old City of Jerusalem and rushed onto the Temple Mount, for the first time in almost 2,000 years, the city of Jerusalem was once again reunited East and West.

Israel's first Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion said that Jerusalem is the reunited, undivided, capital city of Israel and the Jewish people. Every PM of Israel has stated since that time that Jerusalem will never be divided again. Therein is the controversy that will surround Jerusalem and only intensify as we grow closer to the Last Days.

The ancient Jewish prophet Zechariah wrote that Jerusalem would be a “cup of trembling” in Zechariah 12:2. The term “cup of trembling” refers to a glass of fermented wine, wine that moves in the cup. And it means that those who control Jerusalem in the Last Days will become intoxicated with power over God's chosen city.

Zechariah 1:14-16 says that the Lord will have a great jealously, or be aggressively possessive of Jerusalem and he will someday come to Jerusalem to build His Temple.

Jerusalem Day 2006 in celebration and controversy is indeed setting the stage for Bible prophecy to be fulfilled.
